Springtime is nearly upon us, and with the blooming greenery and warm weather comes an all inclusive showcase of hip hop goodness courtesy of React Presents. Throughout the month of April, hip hop heads will find themselves in heaven as some of the most iconic and up and coming names in the genre touch down in the city for a slew of defining performances across multiple venues.
Touching down in the city for his very first DJ set at the MID on Saturday, April 22 will be none other than BIG BOI, one half of legendary group Outkast. Featuring a nostalgic mix of material from himself and his friends that spans across several decades and styles, his performance comes as the perfect introduction to a week of incredible hip hop. Master of U.K. grime SKEPTA will be touching down at Concord Music Hall on Monday, April 24 in celebration of his “Banned From America” tour. Konnichiwa, the fourth and most recent studio album released by Skepta, was quickly rated as one of the year’s top records. Apple Music awarded Konnichiwa with the No. 1 spot on its yearly album list, as well as the No. 4 spot on NME and No. 9 on The Guardian‘s own list. Now, after nearly a year since its release, Skepta’s body of work has expanded to include a featured position on Drake’s newest album Good Life alongside the likes of Black Coffee and Kanye West. Next up will be a specially curated collection of hip hop artists from around the country, who will congregate at Bottom Lounge on Tuesday, April 25 as part of Pigeons & Planes’ intimate North American “No Ceilings” tour. Florida up and comer KAIYDO, L.A. rapper BOOGIE, New York native KEMBA and Boston mainstay MICHAEL CHRISTMAS will join forces under the “No Ceilings” banner for an evening of diverse and infectious selections. Rounding out the week will be bright Chicago resident SMINO, known throughout the city and beyond as one of the freshest and most innovative contributors in the scene. His performance at Bottom Lounge on Wednesday, April 26 will see the St. Louis native play out a wide range of brand new tracks from his recently released debut LP blkswn, which was quickly rated by leading hip hop reviews as one of the most successful albums of 2017. The following month on Saturday, May 20 up-and-coming Houston rapper UGLY GOD will be taking the stage at Concord Music Hall in preparation for his debut project titled The Booty Tape. The “Water” rapper, whose video for the song has accumulated over 26 million views in less than a year, recently dropped “Bitch!,” a song from the forthcoming mixtape.
